OrgFab Tables

Biommetics and construction inspired set of tables for exhibition

Project Specifics:
Conceptual Furniture Design

Project Details:
Until recently products and furniture were created by skilled craftsmen, but with the advent of mass production and subsequently computer aided design. Digitally driven fabrication methods the skill and craftsmanship within design has all been streamlined into a generic computer aided aesthetic within design. Whilst this highly developed sense of design has many benefits such as a high degree of accuracy, minimal if any difference from product to product and much quicker production cycles, there has been something lost in translation.

The Organic fabrication series takes the best of both technologically driven and craft based design. The Range is manufactured with the highest of accuracies and tolerances to within .01 of a millimetre or degree from aluminium composite and then each piece is painstakingly assembled by hand to create a product that crosses the borders between old and new.

The term organic fabrication and the overall structural aesthetic of the range have been born out of research into Biomimicry where one of the outputs looks at how nature constructs. The triangulated geometry combined with the aluminium composite material used allows for a great amount of strength with a minimal amount of material. The combination with the lightweight material the strength versus weight ratio is quite high which allows for easy moving around.

The range follows the functions of existing furniture and interprets them in its organic fabrication method applying it's own view of form and function. For example a table is a raised surface, a wall unit is a way of storing things behind closed doors and a shelf is a surface that connects to a wall. The organic fabrication range allows users to create interiors by combining multiple products from the range that employ the same fabricated language of aesthetic. Organic Fabrication could be used as a singular focal point of an interior or alternatively more of the range could be used to create a common language between objects.

Highly technical digitally created craft, it brings craft back to the digital age.
